I recently purchased what is commonly known as a JABC. The gun is marked "Rival No. 6" and I would like to find out as much as I can about it such as, what company marketed it, when it was made, and what it may have sold for. It is a 12 gauge hammergun with damascus barrels. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Could it be 'No. 8'? https://www.shotgunworld.com/threads/rival-no-8-marked-side-x-side.455471/With full size in focus close up images of every mark on the barrel flats, just forward of the flats, and action flats we might be able to ID the maker; likely Louis Muller of Liege. He registered twelve tradenames 1889 to 1894 including: Acme, Club, Climax, Star, Rival, Standard, Meteor, and I.X.L. http://www.littlegun.be/arme%20belge/artisans%20identifies%20m/a%20muller%20gb.htm

Herschel Chadick used a similar term, only added "old" to it. "Just an old brown gun." Worthless info to topic... JR

You haven't been shafted in a gun deal until you dealt with Herschel Chad-Dick. RWTF

Thank you for the quick reply Drew. It looks to have the same assortment of proof marks as the #8 that you have pictured but it is marked #6 and appears to be of better quality than the gun shown. I wonder if the # designations indicate various qualities. Would you have any old advertisements in your records?

No, I'm sorry. The best bet might be to see if your local library can access a Van Camp Hardware & Iron Co., Indianapolis catalog. The proof marks will provide at least a range for the DOM, but it's likely pre-WWI.

Found a refinished Rival No. 3 - no engraving and Twist barrels. Like the No. 8 linked above, pre-1893 proof marks (the ELG in an oval is not crowned), and no maker's mark. Interesting floor plate Let us know if you come up with a Van Camp catalog.

The fact that the #3 has no engraving and twist barrels seems to lend credence to the #'s indicating various degrees of quality since my #6 has some engraving and damascus barrels. It also shows the same engraving as can be seen in the #8 and the same floorplate as #3. Also the #8 has a rib extension with a crossbolt whereas my #6 has no crossbolt. Instead it has a rib extension with a dolls head that is shaped like a clover leaf. I will check out your tip about the library and will post the results if any are found. In the meantime if you find out anything else please let me know. Thanks again, Austin
