A friend has a French double that has no maker named, just that, presumably, of the retailer who sold it. It's a 12 ga, marked 70 mm, 27" barrels, DT, straight/splinter, weighing 6 lbs 4 oz. Marked only: Pierre Mounanes, 32 Rue Caumartin, Paris. A nice little double. I have an image of the proof marks but I can't figure out how to attach it to this message. Can I email the image to someone on the board who can post the? We'd really like to know more about this gun. Thanks, Larry

You might want to run this data by Raimey Ellenberg , a gent from Alabama who is a regular contributor here, and has a solid knowledge of European firearms, especially German/Autrian and French/Belgian. RWTF

I see an Arquebusier Pierre Mounanes @ 4 rue de L'Isly , but that is about all.

We haven't commented a lot about Parisian guns. The poincons on the action flats and barrels flats and on the barrel itself will tell a tale. Fortunately we have some French contributors (FAB500 among them) who will chime in once photos are published. '
I posted illustrated detailed instructions on the Coirier Shotgun line just below on how to post photos.

Not sure of the exact date, but @ some point the Paris retailers sourced the talented mechanics in Liège, for their wares. Oddly enough, I believe it was say 1575 when the Paris gunmaker's guild was formed & to be a member one has to make a “rouet” as well as a tube. Then it was to be proofed with a charge of 2 times the weight of the bore. Subsequently, they wanted old fellas, Kids & Drummer Hoff to fire it off so they made a Garden of Gunsmiths that Drummer Hoff fired off on a certain Sunday. Serbus, Raimey rse

Looks like an encricled >>L&B<< on the underside of the right tube?

L&B is what I see when I enlarge the image.

Well, it's been reproofed a couple of times but I don't see a Paris proof mark anywhere. There are Liège marks and agree with the above analysis on the origin. The comments by Pierre Didier (DREVET) in 1878 in the sidelock French shotgun line above show him complaining that the Parisian gun makers were using Belgian tubes and putting their names on them. By the 1890's Belgian Damascus tubes dominated the UK market.
I'd be interested in an analysis of these proof marks. I can see it's now proofed for 70mm (2 3/4") but darned if I can understand the other marks. We will learn a lot.
