Looking for information on the existence of factory records for maker Charles Ingram 18B Renfield Street Glasgow. I have 12b BLE in a nice maker case I am seeking more information on. Thank you.

Did you find this thread from 2016 Bill?

Hopefully Mr. W Martin has made some progress since. You might send him a PM.

In 1895 he was on Renfield St. An undated gun with the Renfield address had SN A5547

He was on Bothwell St. in 1922
https://books.google.com/books?id=U25EAQAAIAAJ&pg=PA34-IA67&lpg

I found one sold with SN H21393 listed as 1926 DOM and the case had the Bothwell St. address

SN 2452 and AK 153 had Waterloo St. address.
AK 56 with Waterloo address

According to Nigel Brown's British Gunmakers, Vol. Two, Charles Ingram was at this address between 1924 and 1946.

Have you dated the proof marks?

So, do any records still exist for Ingram?

If all else fails and if someone would like to spend 5000 hours, 5 years, and be subjected to a lot of guff, one might try this:

1) compile a database of all known Ingrams by serial number - determine if the SN's are consecutive. I think to have an adequate graph you'd only need 50 or so guns, maybe less.
2) sort them by serial number and see if the addresses on the ribs have a pattern relating to the gun serial numbers.
3) Use the UK Press databases to compile all known press advertisements for Ingram: The addresses in the ads combined with the dates of the newspapers should give a clue as to when he moved shops and give solid data-points for dating the guns: The ads combined with the guns will confirm what he was making at the time and perhaps what patents he was using.

Etc.

Just joking...but if someone gets really interested in one gun maker, the temp-plate is there. It's been done.

You're kidding, right? The books and serial number lists compiled on the Syracuse Lefever guns documented a whole lot more than 50 guns, and there is still much confusion, and incorrect assertions concerning them. I could well imagine that such careless and inadequate research might lead one to being subjected to "a lot of guff".

I suppose it could even permit one to conclude that Ingram had over 300 employees, with no real evidence. It helps to use plenty of conjecture, and terms like "might have", "perhaps", "could have", and etc. a whole lot.

A true sign of mental illness is any gun owner who would vote for an Anti-Gunner like Joe Biden.

Just found some correspondence from Graham Mackinlay Gunmakers, Dumbarton, Scotland, who advises that the records for Ingram no longer exist.

Graeme owns the company name and can advise on quality and date of manufacture if given details of the gun.

Kieth is mentally ill and cannot read. He is not interested in scholarship..only in honing an "enemy list." This get tiresome; he has invaded so many lines and destroyed them without a trace of good posts left behind.
