A seller has a rare set of Ithaca 10 Gauge Magnum Barrels listed for sale on eBay if anyone is interested; serial number 5001XX 32" with 3.5" chamber stamp marked Field Grade. I'm assuming these are 10-bore since the chambers are 3.5", but I believe the seller has them listed as 12 gauge.

i have messaged the seller and they tell me the barrels are 12 ga....if you notice the 3 1/2' chambers marking is not a factory mark....i don't believe.

best regards,

tom

Factory 10 were not marked on this example. This is a NID, not exactly the same. But I do not doubt a 12 barrel has enough strength to pass proof for 3 1/2" chambers. Those were stout barrels, cannon like.

But this is a true NID 10 Mag. and it does have the markings.

And the EBay barrels in question. I would ask the seller to drop a shell into the barrels or measure the chambers.

The F does denote a Field grade, where the 3 on the other denotes a grade 3 gun. For years the Supers attracted little attention but they seem to have acquired a real following these day and bring premium prices. Wonder where the rest of that gun ended up? Most times barrels go first, or perhaps these did and this is why they are orphans.

I regret not buying a couple given the chance over the years. I saw one ten with an extra set of 12 gauge barrels but they were not factory and the barrel fit was a bit off. I am sure if you have asked Ithaca would have built you a ten/twelve combo for the right price. The depression years saw makers doing a lot of things for people who wanted to buy their best guns.

A few years ago, I saw one of the 500,000 NID magnum series 12 gauges. It was stamped 2 3/4", unlike any others in that serial range that I have seen. As I recall, it was a Grade 7.

KY Jon suggests asking the seller to try a 10 gauge shell, or provide measurements.

i have already done so....and was told that a 12 gauge shell was a "perfect fit"....obviously there was no such animal as a 3 1/2" 12 gauge during the era in which the barrels were made. but, as jon states, these guns were built quite heavily and likely would be usable with appropriate 3" loads. marked 4 + 4, so full choked....if they haven't been altered.

best regards,
tom

I've seen magnum-frame 12-gauges with both "3 Chamber" and "2 3/4 Chamber" markings serial numbered in the normal magnum 500xxx range and ones marked "2 3/4 Chamber" with regular NID serial numbers --

What some feel is a "perfect fit" is a gauge off for others. I would be more comfortable if this seller would try a 10 gauge shell in the chamber. It could also be a chamber sleeved ten gauge with a 12 gauge sleeve.

Researcher,

12ga 2 3/4" with 500 range serial numbers?

I know to never say "never" but that would be a flyer, no?

Would be rare enough to find a 3" 500?
