A day late and a doller short I fear. Have a friend who wants to hunt ruffies and has his late father's 1952 M12 with a full choke barrel. He's loth to alter the gun, so a 2nd barrel seems to be the most elegant solution. I've forgotten just exactly where to search for such a relic anymore. Any suggestions here?

Corson's may have one. Also quite a few barrels on GI and GB lately. No bargains tho!

My suggestion is to buy this set and make the choke what you want with
Orlen screw in chokes

Mike

p.s. or just cut the barrel to CYL at 26 inches

All good suggestions. The least expensive way to use the gun for grouse might be purchasing some spreader loads.

I would watch for one on EBay. They seem to be a fairly good number of them for sale most months.

I have one. Nickel steel, full choke, 26", needs a refin. Not pretty but undamaged. PM if you're interested.
I also have the action, bolt, trigger and uncut field stock less butt plate.

If it were my inherited M12- full choke- I'd shoot spreader loads. Interchanging barrels on any M12 is not the same as with a Remington 870 or Ithaca 37. If you ever wanted to sell or trade that M12, it will be worth waaaaay more than if you alter it in any way, shape or form. To cut down the barrel to "open the choke" is about like having a frontal lobotomy to cure prostate problems.. RWTF

I opened the full choke on my 1926 field grade 16 gauge model 12 because the original full choke was worthless for what I needed the gun for. It patterned like s%#t with spreaders too, polywads and hand loads. Shooting birds over pretty good pointing dogs…I never once needed the full choke, then again, “pillow casing” hard earned game birds was never my thing. I just don’t get my jollies destroying game birds.
I opened the choke to .010 and never looked back. No hard feelings either. It’s my gun and I’ll do what I need to it for it to work for me. I’ve taken limits of pheasants, Chukars, huns, Sharptails, ruffies, blues, & quail (bobs & valley).

Pattern the gun with spreaders and see what it prints. My feeling is that you’ll find what I did, the spreader patterns just aren’t gonna hack it.
See if one of those barrel sets can be fitted, if it’s possible, go for it. If that’s not an option, adjust that choke for what would work best for you.
