Good morning

I have a 1928 16 GA NID.

Would a Hawkins pad be somewhat in context for this shotgun?

I know the sunburst Ithaca pad came out about 4 years later and would not be out of line and I have a couple of repros from CSMC.

I am not trying to replicate a factory pad as much as just being period correct as I can.

Thoughts?

I always liked the sunburst pad for looks on a NID. As you say for the early guns it is not technically correct but how many technically correct guns are there after 90 years of use? If you could install it without cutting the stock it would be the best of both worlds. Basic period correct pad and basic unaltered gun that put back into original condition. Reversible at alterations are my favorite these days.

both my NID 10 Magnum and my NID Super 10 came with Hawkins pads so it is a correct offering from Ithaca. My early NID 12 with the star engraving has the black butt plate

The Ithaca Field Special illustration in the 1931 catalog showed a Black Hawkins Model 25 pad.

I have a model 32 hawkins pad (original)

If it were mine I would put the Sunburst pad on it and not worry about the dates. It is an extremely good looking pad, IMO. I have several Hawkins pads on guns, and like them all, but if it was an Ithaca it would get the Ithaca pad.

I'm with Stan. Long ago I found an original Black Hawkins 25 and it was surprisingly heavy. If the repros are similar it and would certainly affect the balance of a 16g NID.

Probably no-one interested in this except me, but some time ago I weighed the pads I had on hand to see how they compared. Here's the results:

Original Hawkins Trestle (Hearts) 5.5 oz.

Jostam No-Kick Coming 3.7 oz.

Leather KickKiller Slip-On Lace-On 4.8 oz.

I realize I should have included the size of each, but didn't take note of that at the time.
