Just before his death Mike Petrov ask me to be the keeper of his .400 Whelen reamer and to make it available to anyone that wanted to use it. Three folks made initial contact about borrowing it but there was never any follow through. It was used on my rifle and Stuart Satterlee used it once. It has lain idle since then.

It is a piloted PTG finish reamer, a headspace GO gauge and two additional pilots (.4030 and .4036). Although Mike didn't know how many chambers had been cut with this, I don't believe it was many.

I am selling the reamer, gauge and pilots and would like $150 for them. Payment can be made by donating this amount directly to Dave of this BB as a small tribute to Mike for his extraordinary contributions to the knowledge base of this forum. When Dave confirms payment I will ship them to you.

Dennis, first off, what a generous action on your part. Thank you.

Secondly, if it has not been claimed, I will take this. Please let me know if it is still available and I will get payment off to Dave.

Thanks again,
Hoot

Gentlemen,

How much barrel wall thickness does a .400 need? Can a typical 30.06 barrel, say a Springfield, safely be bored out to a .400?

My problem lies in reconciling my gross habits with my net income.

For years I've heard that .125" wall thickness at the muzzle is a safe minimum standard and have personally used it on a number of rifles. This would indicate that the Springfield barrel would be fine if over .558" diameter (don't have one handy to measure). I should also add I've heard of several being done in the past Good luck with your project...

The Kreiger barrel that went on my Whelen was profiled after Mike's Surkamer and the muzzle wall thickness is .135". The muzzle OD is .680". To duplicate the profile I measured the Surkamer barrel diameter at half inch intervals and that contour was turned into a CAD file for Kreiger.

Dennis, you are right on and I am in error. Please forgive my bad figuring. If the Whelen is intended for .411 bullets, the muzzle diameter would then be in excess of .661" (.411 + .125 + .125) and match up with your value. All I can say is "I had a senior moment"... Ed
