Marriott

I know some of you are Reiley fans and thought you would find this listing interesting. 40 inch barrels!

“The gun as been held in a private collection for many years and remains in very good condition.

One of the most untouched original guns that we have ever seen in a big bore gun. Nearly as good as the day it was finished by the maker.

40″ Barrels, 14 1/4″ Stock” Marriott

Just a pun @ a Rielly aficionado(addict) being an Alabama native. Phrase of endearment......

That gun is indeed pristine right down to the case colors. It has never been shot (and I can't blame the buyer - fear is a factor). It has Steel barrels - post 1876...

Now here's what I would want to know.

1) What is the address on the rib or barrels?
2) What is the SN on the barrels, action flats etc. (Reilly marketed a lot fo 4 bores but unless he made them himself, he did not serial number them).
2) That half-grip was never (have to qualify this - "almost never") used on a classic Reilly (except on big-bore fowlers). it was used extensively on post 1922 "Riggs Reilly's.
3) The proof marks and the SN would be key - The seller doesn't seem to want to post these.

I have tried to send a note to the seller asking questions. The site doesn't seem to allow this. I would assume this is a 4 bore marketed by Reilly 1870's-1890'a.

Hopeful this hammer gun is a true Reilly. How about some true pictures of the address, proof marks, etc.

If you look at the other four bores on the site for sale, They all have a similar configuration. I think this would support the theory that they were Birmingham made to order for the “maker” Whose name is emblazoned upon the rib.

In fact, someone is liquidating a very impressive collection of 4, 8, and 10 bores via Mr. Marriott. No fewer than 13 four bores are for sale. How about a pair of Watson brothers four bores, New and unfired. Many of them do not have prices and are in very high condition. Quite a few of them are marked “sold“. Some of the more rare ones were posted and within one day the vendor brought out the sold placard. If you like big bores of the British persuasion you owe it to yourself to browse his site for a visual Feast.

Impressive collection. My goodness.....does history of a by-gone era echo in those big-bores. I still want details on the Reilly for history but it seems to be impossible to query the seller...grrrrrrr!!!!

Good stuff, I am importing several of the big bores for clients.
My last shipment had quite a few guns from Giles Marriott in it, all nice quality and in good condition.

Beautiful gun, but would be so much better without that pad.

Where are the mainsprings in this gun? It's a super cool gun but the shape of the lock plates has me wondering if it has coil springs or?

I have fired a 4 bore once. It was surprisingly mild. Those big guns were made for handling the recoil. I bet this one would be even better.

It would be a cool gun to own, but of absolutely no use to me. I don't believe it is a legal game gun in this state for upland birds or for waterfowl nationally. But to shoot a round of trap with it, that would be a dream. smile
