Were the numbers we see on today's published dram equivalent charts arrived at by actual velocity measurements?
The reason I ask is that I have noticed that a 12 ga. dram equivalent load does not have the same published velocity as the exact same load in a 20 ga. For example, a 12 ga., 3 dr. - 1 1/4 oz., load is published at 1165 fps. The exact same load in a 20 ga. is published at 1185 fps.
If these aren't reported actual measured velocities, how were they derived?

Have seen different dram load chart for gauges and weight of shot. 12ga 3 dr 1 1/8 , 12ga 3 dram 1 1/4.... same with other gauges and weights with velocity’s. I believe Dr. Hause and researcher were in that old thread maybe they will come along and link us.
Kinda weird though since several different black powders back when they used the dram thing,
Great question! Love to see explication again

Possibly an engineer would like to tackle the evolution of measuring shot velocity. By 1900 "muzzle velocity" was reported, but even into the 20s "average velocity over 120 feet" was also reported. This is a DuPont Ballistic Table published in Parker Brothers' “The Small Bore Shotgun” c. 1920 http://parkerguns.org/pages/PDF%20Documents/Small%20Bore%20Shotgun.pdf It is clear that this table converts Long Tons to PSI simply by multiplying by 2240; NOT using Burrard’s conversion p. 7 “All powders referred to on these pages are of the bulk nitro kind ranging from 12 (“New Schultze”, New “E.C. Improved No. 2”) to 13 1/3 (original DuPont Bulk) grains per dram…” Original “E.C.” and “Schultze” were 14 grains/dram In a 1927 Western Cartridge Co. flyer “Super-X The Long Range Load” by Capt. Chas. Askins the 12g “Duck Load” (not specified but presumed to be 1 1/4 oz. Super-X “Field”) is described as 3 1/2 dram DuPont Oval Powder; at 1400 fps (at the muzzle rather than 3 feet) and 1000 fps average over 40 yards. And modern "muzzle velocity" is measured 3 feet from the muzzle so older MV Dr.Eq. numbers are different. Anyway: A 1 oz. 12g 2 3/4 Dr.Eq. load is 1145 fps. A 1 oz. 20g 2 3/4 Dr.Eq. is 1220 fps because the ejecta is faster through a smaller tube according to that Bernoulli fella

A 1 oz. 20g 2 3/4 Dr.Eq. is 1220 fps because the ejecta is faster through a smaller tube according to that Bernoulli fella Not Gurnall but still pretty funny. Euler was Bernoulli’s friend. Figured Drew would enjoy the story. There is a famous legend[65] inspired by Euler's arguments with secular philosophers over religion, which is set during Euler's second stint at the St. Petersburg Academy. The French philosopher Denis Diderot was visiting Russia on Catherine the Great's invitation. However, the Empress was alarmed that the philosopher's arguments for atheism were influencing members of her court, and so Euler was asked to confront the Frenchman. Diderot was informed that a learned mathematician had produced a proof of the existence of God: he agreed to view the proof as it was presented in court. Euler appeared, advanced toward Diderot, and in a tone of perfect conviction announced this non-sequitur: "Sir, a+bn/n=x, hence God exists—reply!" Diderot, to whom (says the story) all mathematics was gibberish, stood dumbstruck as peals of laughter erupted from the court. Embarrassed, he asked to leave Russia, a request that was graciously granted by the Empress. However amusing the anecdote may be, it is apocryphal, given that Diderot himself did research in mathematics.[66] The legend was apparently first told by Dieudonné Thiébault[67] with embellishment by Augustus De Morgan.[68][69] __________________________ jOe, ask Mr. Ed. https://youtu.be/xZJrQI1hLZo

Here 'ya go for this Lord's Day LR Off to church. William Gurnall The Christian in Complete ArmourWhen you think of God, be sure you do not narrow him up in the little compass of your finite apprehensions, but conceive of him always as an infinite being, whose center is everywhere, and circumference is nowhere. When you have raised your thoughts to the highest, then know you are as far, yea infinitely farther, from reaching his glory and immensity, than a man is from touching the body of the sun with his hand when got upon a hill or mountain.
