I found this old forend in my parts bin, it has the June 1, 1880 Pat. date on it for US Patent 228,165.

The original guns serial number is 42634.

I'm curious as to whether this could have only been on a Baker gun or was the same patent used on LC Smiths? If so can which gun it was on be told by the serial number?

Also, the end is 1.60in. wide, is that for a 12ga?

thanks,

Rob

It looks like the iron used on the early LC guns, the 2 round pins were bearing surface for the cocking rods.

Thanks James, since it was a 1880 patent was it also used onBAkers? Were the pins hardened to bear the cocking rods?

no clue about the Bakers, I assume the pins were hardened, they were replaced with the floating plate in the early 1900s

How can the cocking rod pins ""bear" on the top of the rear section of the forearm iron-- they are opposite hand cranks, they work as cams inside the rear radiused face of the forearm iron, not on the top. Someone might want to get a copy of the Brophy book on schematics of the L.C. Smith designs. RWTF

James is correct re: Syracuse hammerless

Fulton hammerless cocking plate.

We've not been much help on the LCSCA frown

It appears to be a hammergun FE but the SN doesn't fit

The 1880 patent date was for the "J" spring that W.H. Baker invented and patented. It was used on his line of guns and also on L.C. Smiths from Syracuse and Fulton.
On the L.C. Smith site the pictures posted show that the Syracuse for-end metal was wider than the Fulton for-end metal.

Runs, the Syracuse hammerless guns, the cocking plate was built in and not replaceable.
