For myself, it's always the sidelock. Truth is the boxlock is probably an improvement in function over the sidelock because it's simpler...Geo
Way more room to decorate the sidelock though!

From just what is visible in that photo, I would choose the boxlock, but there is no loser there.

Sidelock is no guarantee of quality and may have a weak stock. Area for engraving and perceived extra value in the market are the Sidelock advantage. There are some mighty compelling Scottish boxlock guns.

Those oak leaf carved fences on the BLE absolutely scream Joe Brown. Beautiful gun.

I like quality, wherever it's found. IMO, you can buy a higher quality gun in a boxlock for the same money.
So, if money is no object, I druther a sidelock. If pinching pennies but insisting on quality, a boxlock.

+1, Stan and Saskbooknut.
And how much difference for a SLE and BLE of equal quality you might well ask! So, lets take a look.
Both best work guns by BV3 makers in slightly used current condition (CC2). SLE is BV3-OQ1-CC2 = $14,000 and BLE is BV3-OQ5-CC2 = $4,200. The BLE costs 30% of the SLE.
Stan's "if money is no object" has a thunderous ring to it.
