I would like to date a W&C Scott. Hammer gun, Bogardus A, serial 10741.

According to the dates and serial numbers in Crawford and Whatley's book The History of W. & C. Scott Gunmakers, that number would correspond to about 1878.

This gun does not have retracting strikers or any means to do so. Would this put the date closer to 1870? Also, does your source provide a weight for this gun. Barrels are 32 1/4 inch.

By 1878 it should have rebounding hammers.

Hammers are rebounding, the strikers (firing pins) free float without any mechanism to retract from the breech face. My source on early Scott guns indicates that in 1873 Scott added a mechanical means to retract the strikers. This gun has none.

Could be that the little coil springs are gone. On mine I removed the firing pins and cut ballpoint springs to proper length, put them on firing pins, and everything works perfectly. That was years ago and some thousand rounds later.
