It was adjustment in market value as a result of poor decision to ruin the buttstock, and the key word is "market"
Not many individuals (adults that is) find a LOP of 13 1/4" acceptable. (LOP formerly 14 1/2", now listed as 13 1/4") I agree the measurements are different, but I wonder if the stock was changed as it still has heal and toe plates surrounding a checkered section. Just a guess but I suspect it was measured incorrectly from the rear trigger. This picture is from today's auction. Looking at the photo and considering that the toplever is likely slightly less than 2 inches long(the portion you can see extended from the rear of the action), then the buttstock looks longer than the 13 1/4" LOP listing of the auctioneer. Damascus barreled English shotguns still are sought after, so someone received good value for funds expended.

Just when you think the market is soft, check out what this 16g Heym SxS brought a few weeks ago: 16g Heym 4A That's a solid sale with the buyer's commission on top. OWD

The wonder to me is that it brought as much as it did the first auction. Cylinder in the right barrel with 30" barrels? ....................... perhaps just a correcting market adjustment.

I agree, Keith, but, would add that the times have changed a bit since Bonhams sold it. They wouldnt have duplicated the number of the first sale, unless two of Mortimers relatives, who both wanted the gun, were in attendance.
Best, Ted Ted, I could not disagree more. I've learned a number of things about auctions and auctioneers over the years. But one absolute is that nobody can know how an auction of any item will end... unless the auctioneer is dirty. That said, a competent auctioneer who understands how to draw and stimulatee bidding activity will almost always realize better hammer prices for the consigner.
A true sign of mental illness is any gun owner who would vote for an Anti-Gunner like Joe Biden.

Stan, A lot of English guns from the Damascus era were choked exactly like that. It is not unusual. But, as Keith noted, you can never predict how an auction will end. That said, Id take my chances on a private sale over an auction any day of the week.
Auctions arent about good deals. Not to say that doesnt ever happen, but, that isnt the reason they exist.
Best, Ted
