A friend has come up with a cure for oxidized shot. He puts the shot in the tumbler of a vibratory brass polisher, adds a small amount of very fine white sand and runs it for a day. He then puts the shot through a screen , the sand and dust falls through and the like new shot is ready to use.

Unfortunately, everything left in the tumbler is legitimately a hazardous material with no alternate useful purpose. Now what to do with it?

I suppose you could just send the sand contaminated with lead oxide to Nova Scotia. It sounds as if the people there are already suffering brain damage...

Thank you !

Waste is not waste until it is declared as waste.

The sand is useful for concrete blocks smile

About the sand and dust you may want to send it to Al Gore to help backfill the zinc mine on his property.

Bill,
Just a thought, but would the shot size possibly change after the polishing?

Why???? Serious question, what is the point of doing all of this?? Oxidized, polished, just load it and shoot it. The clay, bird, etc will NEVER know the difference.

LeFusil, oxidized shot just sticks in your loader drop tube, plus it craps up the bottles etc.

I have cleaned and polished tons of reclaimed lead. My process is in a steel cement mixer wash shot with Dawn dish soap, flood rinse until water runs clear.
drain, start mixer while torching with propane weed burner, as shot gets hot it will dry and round some of the dimples, add dry moly--just a little dab will do ya- you will have a very blue shiny shot that will load nice.

Do this at your brother in laws house, as it makes a mess!

*EPA regulations does not treat range lead as a hazardous material
as in their publication "Best Range Practices"

Seems all of my shot is old and oxidized, I dont have any problems with it dropping. Seems like a giant pita all this. What if you added just a little more graphite to it?

My experience with oxidized shot says that it plugs the loader (MEC) and each time you get a charge to drop there is a small cloud of lead dust coming from the drop tube. I only load 410 and 28 so this makes things tougher. That dust and the area it contaminates must be bad for your health.
