Both barrels are marked with a crown S which means they were proofed for shot. Each also is marked with a crown W which means both barrels are choked. The proof mark, showing the barrel is choked, does not indicate the amount of constriction. Choke is defined by the % of shot in a certain size circle, and a given barrel may register a different choke with different loads. Experience with many German guns show they tend to be very tightly choked, especially pre war and immediately post war guns. This is because when they were made there were no shot cups, buffers, etc. More recent German guns are marked as to choke by "full", "3/4", "1/2", "1/4", or "Cylinder"; written in German, of course.

Well, the marks are mixed. I can't remember which proof-facility uses >>CHOK<< to designate choke nor which proof-facility uses kilo-pond(pondus) for weight but the tubeset should weight 1212kp. I'll ponder on those choke numbers and what I think to be a proof date of 10.1973 below the W surmounted by a Crown(spangled M)?

Your bore diameters should be 17.00 mm and 17.03 mm, is my guess.
Measure the muzzle with a dial caliper - the difference is your choke constriction.
Be sure to take several measurements because nuzzles are often out of round.

17.0 & 17.03 convert to 0.669" & 0.670" respectively, a bit over nominal .0662" for a 16 but about dead on fo a 16/1 (0.669").

As used by the Brits, "choke"--depending on the time period in question--only meant that the gun had at least a relatively small amount of constriction. At one point, .008 constriction meant a barrel had to be marked choke--and whoever submitted the gun for proof could request that it be marked choke with less than that. I think .004, if my memory isn't failing. Don't know whether the Germans had something different in mind when they marked a barrel "choke".
