From the "Hunting_Heritage" article in the link:

"Something you may notice at once is the hole in the buttstock. Yes, it looks a bit unusual – but no, it isn’t an early version of a thumbhole stock! This is a working gun for harvesting lots of waterfowl and the hole is for mounting, making it easier to fire the big bore from a small boat"

That will not be cheap! The hole in the stock is for a breeching rope to pass through so that it can be used as a light punt gun. Usually there is some system in place so that both barrels can be discharged together. Not something to do from the shoulder! Plain action shows that it was made as a practical wildfowling gun. Nothing fancy. Nice! Lagopus…..
