I've got a Winchester Model 42 .410 pump which needs some work on timing adjustment and general smoothing up. Can anyone recommend a gunsmith who is good on Model 42s?

If you do not mind sending it off.

Freer Gun Shop

Houston, TX. 77080

I had a shooting guy who had about 30 model 42s and Freer"s always maintained them

Checked the website, first time since Les passed away. They take consignment guns but don't offer any guns for sale. They offer wood refinishing as part of their service, but say that their wood refinishing guy retired in 2010 and they haven't gotten anyone to replace him yet. They offer high grade gun restoration but say that their search for someone to do that type of work is largely unsuccessful. I wonder if they really can fix a Model 42 or a Model 12? I, also, am looking for such a gunsmith.

When a 42 goes bad you might get as well throw it away. Send it to me, Ill take care of it. Seriously what exactly is the issue. I run a small stable if 42s and might be able to direct you to the right person depending on what you want to have done. Often there are two problems with 42s. 60 plus years of crud or worse 60 plus years of poor repairs by experts who should have both hands broken.

Agree, Jon- In Silvio and pals book on Hemingway's guns, the second edition, the M42 he once owned, and let third wife Martha Gelhorn start her short hunting career with, was severely "bodgered" by some "Hack"--

I visited the area Cabela's Gun Library today, and they had several 12 gauge M12's with some area of concern, at least to me. Unlike the now defunct Gander Mt. - with the Cabela's/Bass-ackwards-Pros-- they just buy "em low, and sell 'em "As is" no warranty as to function. RWTF

Ahlmans Custom Gun, in Morristown, MN. Great work, but, it takes a while.

Forgot about Nu-Line. Thanks George, they would be my first recommendation.

Theres a gent in Indiana who is an old school, Winchester trained repair guy. He is the most knowledgeable Winchester guy I know of. Uses the right finishes, bluing solutions, etc. Many dont know this, but Winchesters were polished a certain way too. He does it correctly.
