I have two guns that I would like to have the stocks repaired.

One is a Semi-auto that was dropped and broke a chunk out of the stock where it connects to the receiver.

The other is a drilling that seems to have a crack in it somewhere, because when you shoot it the stock produces a gap in the tang area close to the receiver. This one also needs to be refinished, checkering recut, new butt plate and grip cap.

Any recommendations on who to sent them to? These are $1500.00 guns so I am looking for a reasonable price also.

For the semi-auto might probably less expensive to bolt on a replacement rather than repair.

My problem lies in reconciling my gross habits with my net income.

Yeah, if it was a Rem. 1100 I would probably agree with you, but this semi-auto came with some very nice wood, it also has a wood butt plate with checkering. I may be low on the $1500.00 value. The chip fits back into place nicely so I hope it wont be too much

If the chip fits back in place nicely, this is a very easy and straightforward repair. Don't lose that broken piece! Done correctly, the repair should be virtually undetectable, and it should be just as strong as it was before it was broken. For something like that, I wouldn't even consider a replacement stock unless one was given to me for free. And I would still fix the broken one. Here are a couple links to discussions about stock repair from the Gunsmithing forum:

Most gunsmiths will probably want to use a clear epoxy to make this repair, and that will leave a glue joint a bit more visible than Titebond II wood glue. If you have a nice piece of wood, I would want to see examples of their work and compare both quality and prices. I do my own stock wood repairs. It ain't rocket science, and it isn't a costly thing, but it does take some knowledge, equipment, and experience to do a nice job. A real nice stock isn't the place to start practicing stock repairs.

With regard to the drilling, this is really a pretty common fault, especially with "trigger plate actions". If you look at photos of a few drillings, you will note a reinforcing bolt near( usually in front of) the Greener safety. When tastefully done, with appropriate engraving, this is an acceptable repair. With a little effort a steel bolt can be installed "blind", bedded in epoxy, and clamped together until the epoxy sets up. Of course this requires the bolt( machine screw with the head cut off)to be let in from inside, so the ends don't show. This method will likely be a little more costly than the exposed bolt.

Get the semi-auto to me next time we shoot, Lee. I've repaired these kinds of breaks numerous times.
