Salopian a quick phone call for you. lol not so much for us. Do they answer email? I haven't found many businesses that do. I'll give him a try with the email.

Hainsworth in the UK
https://www.hainsworth.co.uk/collection-categories/interior-fabrics/

They will speedily send samples of anything you wish to see first hand. Fast order processing too.

Hide glue for adhesive.

I bought some baize, pearl glue and interior boards from them. Shipping was only 10 pounds. That should be enough to redo my case.

I know this is an old thread.... But I'm wondering how your cloth and project worked out.

I'm considering three options for sourcing baize for a project and would like to get opinions.

Here are info and prices, including shipping (links to pages):

1. Peter Dyson- 1 yard of 30" wide 'premium baize' fabric, $70
2. Blatt Billiards- 1 yard of 66" wide Simonis 860 (27oz 90% worsted, 10% nylon), $72
3. William Booth 1 yard of 60" wide Broad cloth (28oz 100% worsted, 'light nap'), $46.50

Right now I'm leaning in the direction of the Simonis 860. Peter Dysons cloth is tempting, but they don't say exactly what your getting, it will take longer to ship from Britland to the Bayou, and the cost is twice that of the Simonis.

I would like to keep the restoration authentic, so if you all say that Dyson 'baize' is the genuine stuff and Simonis is not, I might go that route.

Don't really know what to think of the thick broad cloth from Willam Booth. Sounds a lot like baize, but I suspect there is a difference. Good thing is you can order as little as a quarter yard ($8.50), so a sample of fabric is possible.

Jim,

There is a dealer, billiard cloth, in Charlotte, NC, that sells the same cloth as Blatts in NYC. George P. buys baize from them and I ordered 36+60” of the bright red for a Grant case. Easy to cut and work with, I,ll dig out particulars later today with phone number. The Charlotte store offers several types, all about 40. per yard. There is an outlet in PA that sells all sorts of baize and wool sourced from England and Scotland for tartans. I ordered black watch pattern in wool for Scottish gun oak and leather relining. Fabri Tac glue works well for small areas, no overspray as with S77, as does Locktite super glue.

I attempted to purchase from Hanisworth but could not communicate, so...

Good luck,
John

Thanks John. Any info you have on those two sources would be great.

I came across another cloth after posting, and I think it might be nice. Its a snooker table cloth called Strachan 6811. It has a nap to it, and can be bought at 30 or 32oz. Only issue is that I can't find it by the yard, and a table sized piece is about $500! I wonder if your NC contact might have it by the yard.

The "Doeskin" line by Hainsworth is the most perfect match I have seen to the original weight of wool using in antique cases. Have used it several times, and have never been disappointed.

Many people use wool that is too heavy, and the finished case partitions look bulky. If you are doing a French fitting, it doesn't really matter.
