What does the "S" in an oval mark mean on the barrel flats of a British double rifle? I cannot find it in the typical charts. Thanks.

I am certainly not an authority on double rifles but I think that you are looking at a maker's mark or the trade mark for the barrel steel.
I don't remember any 'S' in an oval being in any of the proof mark tables I have ever seen.
