British or American?.....I would definately want a Parker to be black & white....a Lefever could go either way....a British gun brown & white....

My Lefever is black and white. Black and white really makes the pattern stand out and I have become very enamored with it. But I think most here will tell you it is not right for a British gun. I don't remember ever seeing a British gun that was not brown and white.

Black&white is startling but it gets lost at some angles under the amber cast of a laquer overcoat.

American..........but mostly in general. I do have a French gun with twist barrels that I want to do. What would be correct for it?

A good reason not to use laquer on it. I have used Tru-oil per Dale Edmond's suggestion.
I would agree with the above about British vs American. I would also suggest that a low grade simple twist from either may look better browned.

Friends:
Brown and White is what is expected on a Brit gun. I believe the coloring is even mentioned in Greener's "The Gun and Its Development", and this was Oscars conclusion as well.
An American gun most likely ( I am not qualified to comment on Lefevers, really, except that the one damascus Lefever I owned was black and white in the protected areas under the fore-end, and the remainder was purply brown)will be black and white.
My 1892 Prussian Schilling has a much faded black and white finish, which is eveident in the protected areas.
If you want it to be right, that's the first question I would ask - what color?
Regards

Tru-oil also has a yellow cast to it. For B&W I would use Behlens Clear spray.
