Have a 94 put aside which is 1940s vintage with a flat metal butplate.
It isn't marked and the rifle is a post tang-marking gun.
Anyone know if this was original equipment?
I have seen that style before but I don't know when they started.

I have a 94 in 32 Win Special with a metal butt plate from ~1947. I don't believe it is marked. I don't know what you mean by post tang-marking gun. If there is something you want me to check out on my gun, let me know.

The earlier Winchesters had the main stamp on the tang while later madels had the info on the barrel.
There were a few different butts and this one is flat as opposed to crescent.

According to my book on the 94 an early post war gun, which yours would be, should have a checkered flat steel plate. The only smooth steel plate shown has a slight rollover onto the comb and is from earlier guns.
Then again, after the war the were probably gearing back up for peacetime productionand were using parts that they had laying around. Have you pulled the buttstock off to see if there are any markings in the inletting??

Hey Rob.
I haven't gotten around to taking it apart yet (I have to buy it first). Simply saw the gun on the rack in the shop the other day and proceeded to put it in the back until I could do some looking into it.
It is the flat checkered plate with no rollover which matches what you said regarding postwar.
I saw a rollover this afternoon on a pre war gun. With the exception of a swivel stud, the condition on this gun seems too good to pass up (around 90%).
Just wanted to check first.

The flat checkered plate was first used at or about serial # 1350000.

The buttplate sounds right and pulling the wood may or may not show anything. The book says that they may be marked if the wood was upgraded.
It sound like you may have a line on a nice pre-64 Model 94 and very serious gun loonie should have at least one pre-64 I have 4 and a M64 Deluxe. (Hi, my name is Rob and I'm....)
