Well, only the target style trigger & hammer is cc. It's a Smith & Wesson Mod 27-2 6-shooter in wood case with accessories and all paperwork. Number N480372. It has flyer on S&W ammo, so it's probably made in mid 1970s (I have some S&W 12ga Sabot slugs from that period). Does anyone know approximate date of manufacture? Thanks.

You should be able to get this info if you go to the S&W site and contact them. There is a space at the bottom of their page that says "contact us". Hope this helps.

There is also a very, very active and extensive BBS for S&W handguns. The Model 27 is IMO one of the finest handguns ever made. The parts are all milled/machined, not "MIM" and were hand fitted by skilled craftsmen. The only difference in the 27 and 28 is the degree of polish to the external metal, the 28 being the cheaper/police version. The 27/28 have some of the best triggers ever to leave a factory, 'course that was when there was still an American work ethic and folks took honest pride in their work. I recently acquired a 27(no dash) that has never been fired, 5" barrel(rare) in the box with paperwork. Figure it is and investment as select S&W models have far outpaced the market. Jagermeister, enjoy your new gun! Best, Dr. BILL

Dash 2 serial numbers in the Model 27 started in 1962. The N prefix was authorized in 1969 and began with N1, so your gun is well into the seventies, maybe later. The serial numbers were in sequence for all N frame guns, not just the Model 27. This information is from Jenks, and I hope I interpreted it correctly. I bought my first N frame in the mid sixties from the famous Kenny Haig, then owner of Front Royal Supply, a big VA S&W distributor. I wasn't quite old enough to do it, but Ken was a good friend and understood my need. I still have that great Model 28 for which I paid Mr. Haig the grand total of $69.00 brand new. Murphy

I was thinking the same thing you were, eightbore about the- all N frames were serial numbered in order, but I couldn't remember for sure. Thanks for the heads up. I have a Model 29-2 that has the serial number N121742 that was shipped to a gunstore in Cincinnati on December 20, 1976 and the box is postmarked January 17, 1977. I bought it in early 1977. Same wooden box that you have, Jagermeister. Good luck. You have a great gun.

Wow! You got a bargain eightbore. I remember when I bought my 29, the price was $208.00. My young wife back then had a fit. She got upset over the $50.00 I paid for the Ruger Single-Six that I bought not long before that. The large frame Smiths stayed at $208.00 for a while during the late seventies because I remember I bought an 8" .41 Magnum Model 57 about a year later and the price was still the same. I just noticed recently that the small framed Smiths are now up to around $6-800.00 !! They were only $3-400.00 a few years ago. Phew!!

The Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, by Jim Supica and Richard Nahas, has a serial number and model # index. By now, though, the price guide in the 2nd edition is behind.. Jimmy, Bill H. & eightbore: Well said!
Great finds, All !

Thanks Gents, closer examination revealed that the box #3265 is stamped 1/81, 12/8? (can't quite make it out, but it's probably a 0) by the box maker, so the gun is probably made in early 1980's. The gun itself is very well made, I was going to go with Manurhin MR-73, but why buy a Frenchie for >3x more when something so qualified Made in USA is available.
