How do you tell if a barrel has been hot or rust blued ? How long does it take for the " hot bluing " process to effect the ribs ? What would be the proper process to remove the bluing ? I bought a 1894 Remington and think it has hot blued barrels but they still ring like a church bell. Thanks for any help. Paul

There is a very glossy (coated) look to hot bluing. As compared to a deeper look of rust bluing. A trained eye can see the difference. The way the barrels are polished is a big indicator too. If there are polishing lines against the direction of the tubes instead of with them, that is also an indication of hot bluing. I say this because anyone who does not know the proper bluing pricess for a SxS is likely also not familiar with the proper way to polish a SxS. They would polish them the same way they would a rifle barrel.

Rust weeping out of cracks and crevices are an indicator too.

Hot bluing may never effect the solder joints at all, or it may quickly. Every barrel set is different. It may not start to come apart until they get hot from high volume shooting or until rust starts to take hold.

If they are soft soldered and hot blued they will come apart. Had a 10 bore Parker, it was 10 years of light use but they came apart.

If I remember right, it's the tin(?) in the lead/tin soft solder that is effected by the caustic soda of the hot bluing soln.

The tin/lead alloy bond of the solder is weakened. That is the problem

Anyway, look at the bores of the bbls. They will be blued too including the chambers. Sometimes you have to look a bit sideways at the bbl wall to see the bluing. A glance straight doown the pipe will only show it to be nice and shiny as a polished surface would,,blued or unblued.

Locking bolt surfaces and small undercuts and such on the lugs,,everything gets blued in hot blue immersion.
To bring them back to some look of a rust blue they'd all have to be carefully repolished. Not something easily or normally done by the HB guy. Nore would they normally repolish the bores and chambers to an in the white look.
An older set of bbl should have the patina, darkened discoloration to the in the white areas, but in the white none the less.

I worked w/a gunsmith many years ago that used to add a magic measured amt of potasium cyanide to his home brew hot blue soln.
That was to allow soft solder assembly bbl sets to be hot blued.
I had read where that supposedly supressed the soln from effecting the solder.
He swore by it, I remember a few still coming apart in later years,,, and it didn't do the big yellow barn cat any good that used to wander the shop after she walked through the bluing room one day.

Not 100% positive but I was always under the impression the lead was what was attache by the "Alkaline bluing salts. There are lead free soft solders hich contain around 95% tn with a bit of silver other elements which are said to be totally resistant to the affect of hot bluing salts.

Gil & others;
Actually I am feeling quite well at present. I have experienced no pain at all. None of the possible side effects of my two chemo treatments have afflicted me. I've had an immunio (spell check was worthless) therapy treatment to help build up my immune system against outside infections as well as a sub cutaneous injection to help my white blood cell counts. I do have a very low white blood cell count which places me on a critical condition status, though my doctor still thinks I'm curable, sure hope she's right
Schedule now is I have three more Chemo treatments to go, each of which will be administered over a 3 day period. For my next two treatments I will also receive an injection designed to keep the cancer cells out of my spinal column & brain. As long as that is accomplished hopefully the rest can be killed off & I can hang around for some time yet. After all someone needs to stir the Pot along & keep some straight on their "Facts" & I'm not talking about the political trolls here.
Everyone just keep me in your thoughts & Prayers & on your minds.
