I have been searching high and low for the right piece of leather. It will be covering a replacement pad on my WC Scott. Does anyone have a black piece of leather I could purchase that is similar to the pic below? This was a pic posted by CJO back in 08. It is probably one of the nicest pad textures I have seen and would be a perfect complement to the grain in my stock.
PM me if you can help.

Thanks,
Bill

I just had one done by Martin Hagn in Cranbook, BC. Although mine is brown is has somewhat the same texture. You might want to contact him to see what he uses. He has a web page you can google.

Difficult to say for sure, from the picture, but I'd say that looks very much like real peccary to me. It's s soft mouldable leather, tough as iron, and very pricy.

James Flynn, gunstocker and gunmaker, who formerly advertised on this site, is considered the best leather covered recoil pad craftsman in the world. His supply of leather for his own use is endless as far as I can tell. I do not know how much you can afford to spend on a proper pad from James, as he is not cheap, for of course quality is not usually cheap.

Even the leather recoil pad work I have seen on the 3 Best Gun makers in England are not up to James Flynn's standard.

I personally can vouch for his expertise.

I agree with Roalco, I'm thinking javelina/peccary. I saved the skin from my last javelina am am having some put on a pad for a Francotte.

My problem lies in reconciling my gross habits with my net income.

Hi Bill

Thats an old picture, my pads have somewhat evolved and dont look quite like that anymore, I was not entirely pleased with the way they looked so I changed my process I find that for the pad to be aesthetically pleasing , the curvature at the back of the pad, the placement and correct size of the plugs, the stock projection lines and the sharp edges of the leather are more or just as important as the grain of the leather itself.

BTW sorry fellas...the leather on that pad is pig skin, unfortunately I was not able to find any more hides with that particular grain structure, I do have a couple of sections left, I've saved them for a double rifle project.

Here is more or less what they look like now

All best,

CJ
