fuhrmann,
I found the Bretschneider after writing the above. I guess it's a Reh cartridge.
Gunwolf,
Thanks, I couldn't find the 9x69R and wondered which case it is based on. It should be a good cartridge, and easy to load for. My German is not very good, but I can get by, if it is pretty simple. I noted that Guenter Freres wrote the article, he certainly knows cartridges.

I have a full length insert barrel in my Krieghoff Bockbüchsflinte 16/70-7X75R SE vom Hofe in caliber 6X52R Bretschneider, turning it into a reasonable facsimile of a Bergstützen. Bretschneider has a web site http://www.bretschneider-waffen-munition.de/ where he discusses his cartridge. He prefaces the discussion by saying,

"Lieber Besucher,

Translated:

"Dear visitor,

When I began my search in 1995, it was my intention to create a 6mm roe deer cartridge which is also at the same time suitable for hunting type competitive shooting. It was meant to be accurate, to cause as little damage to the venison as possible and to also create the desired amount of shock.

These conditions were met with 6X52R Bretschneider."

I have found this to be the case.

I hate to ask a stupid question, but I want to post pictures of the proof marks on the Nimrod, but I haven't figured out how to do it. Copy and paste doesn't work, so I'd appreciate a clue.

Mike,

6x52R: yes, up to roe deer according German laws.
9x69R: In the link given by Gunwolf, this is descibed on the 3rd page (or p.128) in the bottom part.
In brief: 9x69 R cartridge developed by Samereier, a well-known commercial hand-loader in Bavaria - long in business but his website does not work for me. http://www.samereier.de/
Cartridge based on 9,3x74R, shortened and fire-formed. 9 mm is .358 diameter, 16.2 g or 250 grain bullet, velocity 760 m/s or ca. 2500 fps, claimed to exceed .35 Whelen ballistics.
Note: Mr. Freres certainly is one of the experts, but still does not know how to spell "Whelen".... but on the other side Ameicans have problems with German names, too

xausa, fuhrman,
Thanks.
Did you notice the new version of 6.5x52R (blown out 25-35 Win), it almost makes "hochwild patrone", and also the reason for it is a prohibition on bullets containing lead. Baden Wuerttemburg(?) looks like "German California".
Mike.

Mike, unfortunately Baden-Württemberg is not the only state prohibiting lead ammunition.
In North-Rhine-Westphalia, where I'm living, it's the same and more States with Green Party Government will follow.... I'm sure, they will save the world!

Cheers,
Gunwolf
