My next day's shooting is coming up this Thursday. A driven day on the Derbyshire/Staffordshire border, with an expected bag of around 150 pheasant.

I'm really looking forward to it. I believe the anticipation of a shooting day to be very much part of the whole experience. I find myself in the odd moment during the days running up to it thinking about what the day may hold in store. I plan what kit I need to get ready in preparation. I plan the logistics, all the while mentally licking my lips with the anticipation of a good day. I worry about the standard of my shooting, but then imagine pulling down many impressive birds.

For this coming day the anticipation is enhanced because it is an annual family day, organised by my 88 year old father, still shooting well. Alongside him will be my sister, my best friend who is like a brother to me, my brother in law, two of my longest serving shooting friends, who are brothers and one old family friend. We will have much fun pulling each others legs. We will also be very well looked after by our hosts, who we know well as we have been shooting on their estate for several years now. We can anticipate the pleasure of a scrumptious lunch and a delicious tea to punctuate the day.

It is this anticipation which I find to be important. It is one of the things that those few people who shoot four or five days a week throughout the season miss out on, so I don't end up envying them at all.

I'll let you know how we get on!

Tim

Well said, Tim!
Every day we shoot should be a celebration.

Many people never quite understand that.

Have a great time!

Out there doing it best I can.

I hope you have a wonderful day; I get a few days a year, usually a couple of walked up grouse, then half a dozen on a mix of 20% partridge, 80% pheasant. I have two still to come this season ...

I give you "Exhibit A" as to why the English language belongs to the English. Well put, sir!

TRW, may the weather gods shine on your driven day.

It would be nice to be able to afford several driven days a week. But I'm not sure I'd want to do it quite that often. For a Yank, one trip a year with a couple driven days and maybe a day's rough shooting . . . plenty of anticipation for us as well. And shooting with old friends is certainly part of it.

We had that splendid day which I had anticipated!

The weather was cold and overcast, only a slight breeze and the pressure was high. As we drove through the morning mist we were concerned that the birds wouldn't fly well in those conditions. We need not have worried.

We had five drives in total, two before elevenses, one prior to lunch and two thereafter. The bag was 152 pheasant with 5 partridge for extras. We saw some good high, shootable birds, by which I mean 35-45 yards. None of those archangels that are all the rage and which require different gunnery to our traditional fare. In the line we had a Beesley, two Grants, a Clarke, an Army & Navy, a Lang, a Webley 700 and a Beretta 20 bore SxS (my sister). Most of us were using UK No 6 shot with 30 gms.

Also as anticipated, we were royally looked after by our hosts with a delicious lunch, refreshing elevenses and finishing off with tea and cake. More importantly, we all enjoyed being with each other, being outside in the fresh air and having a great time as a team. We chatted to the keeper and the beaters; they too had an enjoyable time, they liked our shooting and the fact that we left enough birds for them to enjoy their beaters shoot day next week.

We are lucky and fortunate in our sport. The anticipation has now given way to mellow reflection. Yet I continue to replay parts of the day in my mind as I go about my daily chores. They will have to nourish me until the start of the next season - which I am already anticipating!
