But something about this stock stirred a memory. It was gone before I got a chance to open Mr. Petrov's books to look. I am curious to hear any comments or observations regarding this rifle => http://www.gunbroker.com/item/612907734

The stock seems to be in out-of-proportion condition relative to the metal. Refinished perhaps? Either way, it was an appealing sporter to me.

It looks like a Newton Springfield that Chas. Newton offered as a kit gun in 1914-15. Marlin made the stocks with the S grip and also the square cut rifled barrels. One could buy either or both and put together a sporter. The SN looks right for the period and the barrel markings are proper too. It does look like someone has slimmed down the fore arm though and maybe recut the checkering. I had one once in my collection of Newtons. Rare gun.

That gun has style that resembles some BPCR singleshots. The schnable in particular is very Winchester 1885-like.

Krag 1902, I was aware of Newton offering to install one of his barrels on a customer's Springfield but I didn't know about the 'kit gun' angle. Very interesting. Thanks!
