The S curve grip on Deluxe Low and High Wall Winchesters is one of the more difficult to correctly render in the third dimension. I recently shaped one and shot a series of pics that might help if you were so inclined. This is not an exact duplicate, I have an original pistol grip stock. My ebony wedge is a bit larger but otherwise this is pretty close to the original.

Profile shaped in S curve with ebony wedge installed.

Rasping first side to rounded contour with layout lines on center-flat and side.

One side rasped, bottom view with layout lines

Rasping second side to rounded contour.

You will note that there is a small sliver of almost sap wood at the very edge of the grip, this all but disappeared in shaping and what it left will be stained to match the background color of the very fancy California English walnut stock.

Here are a couple of pics of the busted, chipped and worn original High Wall Deluxe stock. The wood is American walnut. It is easy to see how I have stylized my own interpretation.

Looks great! The comb on your stock appears lower than on the original. The transition from grip to comb looks better on yours as well. Thanks for sharing.

The S-grip Winchester is, by a pretty long margin, my favorite buttstock. I have a couple and I am building at least 3 more. One will be pretty true to the original, but at least one of the others will have a very different cheek piece.

Thanks for the photos, they are very helpful.

Early 1885 deluxe rifles did not have the curve they later had. The early deluxe had the same shape, but was not as rounded over. The Schuetzen models that came later had a rounded bottom much like the one you built.

Need some good pictures of the stocks side by side to really see the differences.

Thanks…I enjoy shaping stocks above all the other parts of the process.
