Ted: that gun is a prime candadate for using those very reasonable Herter's 16s that Cabelas sells.

Roger that, Lloyd. I'm going to probably work first through those # 5, 6, and 7 Eley VIP loads that were anything but reasonable when I bought a pallet of them, back in the day...

Ted - great grouse/woodcock gun with perfect chokes and barrel length although a little heavy for all day walking and you don't need to worry about scratching it up walking through the perfect grouse cover.

If those are 2 1/2-inch then I'd be conserving them for that perfect someday Darne.

Our own Ken61 did the barrel black, and while he strives for perfection (and, a 1000 grit finish) I asked him to go no more than 320-400, as I suspect that is what would have been done at Ithaca. Comments further than that I can't speak to, but, he might.

I've got the perfect Darne, Lloyd-it just happens to be a 12 that fits a lefty. The best and cheapest ammunition is the stuff I already own.

Tom,
I'm never more than a few hours from a sandwich break while grouse hunting. I haven't hunted a full 8 hour shift in many a moon. I think the Ithaca weighs something like 6 lbs, 4 ozs, it was actually less than a 20 gauge Nitro a gent at my local club brought one day when I had mine along. It isn't too heavy for any day afield I'll be involved with.
Some are heavier, some are lighter. So it goes.

Best,
Ted

Mine is right there also at 6 lbs. 3 oz. and while it doesn't have that sweet balance its light enough to carry all day in the rain, snow, sun, its just that type of gun.

However, I owned an incredibly heavy and bulky 16 gauge NID, an incredibly heavy 20 gauge Flues, and a beautiful 16 gauge Flues built in 1920 I believe that was incredibly light and lively. The Ithaca is all over the place weight wise.

Sold them all and kept the Nitro probably because nobody wanted it. smile

Ted, I like that Nitro. The stock with those pointy panels really looks good!
