Should this Model 21 Serial 164XX have a grip cap?

I own 161xx with a hard rubber Winchester name cap. But Mod 21s were not made up exactly by number. Close numbers can be years apart.

If a standard grade Model 21, probably not. According to Schwing's book, a hard rubber grip cap was offered from 1931- early 50's. Thereafter, Win went to an all steel grip cap. "Grip caps were furnished as standard on all Winchester Model 21 grades except the Standard Grade."

Yours has prewar looking checkering. No problem with no grip cap. I have a 1938 TRAP with no grip cap, so grade is not an indicator.

I agree, nothing is carved in stone with these Winchester guns, but as Schwing points out, there are generalizations that can be made. Having said that, lots of special orders guns too, some likely with and some likely without, grip caps. This particular gun appears to be a standard grade as there is no marking indicating otherwise on the floor plate, and hence, no grip cap.

From the factory it would have had a hard rubber butt plate not the Jostam.

Right?

What woul typical length of pull be to the wood?

From my experience, typical LOP to end of wood of about 13 7/8" with a hard plastic butt plate of 1/4".

Guns could be ordered with a variety of pads.
Here's a '31 Vent Rib TRAP with a factory ordered and installed HAWKINS pad.

And no grip cap. It isn't about the grade of the gun.
