I would like to bring a shotgun back from Kenya this summer and am assuming that arriving at JFK with a gun would be a nightmare. Can any of our New England members advise me on flying into and out of Logan?

JFK has never been a problem for me. Departure can be time consuming but arrivals are very routine. Only used Logan once but no problems there either.

I flew into Newark with a shotgun 5-6 years ago, without any issues/hassles at all.

In a locked case it should be fine. Long guns aren't much of a problem.....yet.

I've hesrd of some pretty nasty problems in Mass with people driving through the state without a Mass firearms ID card. One was, "You stopped for lunch/gas so you weren't driving through but visiting." While those I've heard of have been successfully resolved, the legal fees have been out of my league.

In short, you are wise to want good information.

If you are coming in to the US from Kenya, are you an American citizen? If so, did you register the gun with customs before you left the USA? If not, you won't get past customs. If you're not a citizen, I'm not sure you can bring a firearm in without prior approval. I know I can't travel overseas with a shotgun without a lot of tedious paperwork.

Be very careful about NYC. You SHOULD be ok if it is a connecting flight, but if for some reason the connecting flight is late or cancelled, taking possession of the shotgun in NYC will likely get you arrested. Both NYC and New Jersey do not care about the Federal law that is supposed to protect gun owners while traveling.

Keep in mind it does not matter what airline policy is regarding firearms, it's what the police decide to do that matters.

I lived in NYC for many years and have flown in and out of JFK, LGA and also Boston Logan many times with guns. I have never had a problem at any of the airports, including when I flew out of JFK on September 14, 2001, when security was at an all-time high. I would not give it another thought.

I had to fly into Boston a few times to exhibit at the Vintage Cup while it was there in 2012/13 and used a very helpful firm to clear my guns through customs.
Their details are
John Murray
Office Manager
J.F. Moran Co. Boston
160 Second Street
Chelsea, MA 02150
Direct line – 617-409-0675
Fx # 617-889-6897
They were very efficient and reasonably priced from my experience of flying into the USA 3 times per year.
However, I am not a US citizen so can't advise if you really need to use a broker.
My advice is to do so if there is any doubt, with customs I have learnt that a payment up front can avoid serious costs after the event.
Your decision.
If you choose to fly into JFK the broker to use is
Mike Rea
