Referring to Walt's post on Winchester Ranger Reloads I always wondered how difficult it was to get factory loaded cartridge ammunition in the remote areas of the west and especially in the old west. I can't find a definitive source only bits and pieces. Heck, the last time I was in South Dakota in 2009, I had trouble finding 16 gauge shells. Any thoughts? Opinions? Good references?

No thoughts or opinions on this?

Here's my logistic report on my trip to South Dakota with my sixteen gauge Ithaca Nitro Special, 3 boxes of 10 shells of Kent Tungsten Matrix, 3 boxes of 25 shells of RST Nice Shot, 4 boxes of 10 shells of Bismuth from Bismuth Cartridge Company. My total was 145 shells which was more than enough, however I went to some gun stores to see their stock of 16 gauge shells and found only in one store 2 boxes of Remington high brass lead shells in 16 gauge. Slim pickins.

Options are always limited when you get away from the conventional supply chain anymore. I was up in Martin, South Dakota a few years ago and shot through my non-tox options on LaCreek there fairly quickly. Re-supply was simply not an option (even in 12 bore). Confiscated the remaining supply from my fellow hunters and forced them to shoot steel (not an option for me).

Excellent example Lloyd and exactly the conversation I was trying to get into. Just think how bad it was 150 years ago. Still very difficult to find solid verifiable numbers of cartridges supplied to the various distribution points out in the west. Or maybe I'm just looking in the wrong place.

Wasn't it Montgomery C. Meigs, Quartermaster General of the Union Army who literally throw up his hands in disgust over the difficulties of supplying the Union Army with percussion caps during the War?

If you shoot sub-gauge (and/or English) you simply must take it with you. It's a Walmart world now.
