I do recognize the difficulty of appraising without a photo. From the last time I saw it, it seems to be the same model has the one Ted pictured, without the nice case coloring.

Can these guns handle modern birdshot? I wouldn't be shooting anything high-powered, just what I get at Wal-Mart.

Well, this post is going so many different directions, I don't know where to start.
Gunut. No, $1000 is not a ball park figure. A decent Charlin 12 will be worth more than that. The really beat up guns seem to sell for $750-$1000. I don't know of any type of gun I can give a "ball park" figure for without at least seeing it. Sorry.
Kolhoznik. "Birdshot" isn't the issue. The promotional loads you get at Wal Mart are typically designed to cycle dirty autoloading shotguns reliably, and are some of the very highest pressure loads you can buy. You need to do some research on low pressure ammunition. My own sliding breech guns get fed some high brass, here and there, but, they are much newer than that gun, and triple proofed. An entry grade Charlin likely isn't, and would be better used with lower pressure ammunition. Using an older double of any sort does require an awareness of, and thought applied, to exactly what ammunition you are going to feed it. All those marks on the flats of the barrels MEAN something, and were put there so the user knew what he had.

The topic was fair price on a Charlin. You, per usual, contributed nothing. The Parker people are a smart group, who expect meaningful contributions, which, is why you can't belong there.

Ted...same gun as the one you posted but with next to NO case color remaining....sounds like a $1000 shooter to me....

Maybe, but, we haven't seen it, and what someone says it "looks" like doesn't really help that much with value. Did you know a Charlin could be had with stainless steel barrels and action? Did you know few were built like that? They don't have any case colors, and, let me assure you, will sell for far more than 1K to someone who knows what it is and wants one. They were built as Cape guns, and double rifles. Did the guy who saw it check to see if that was the case? Would a 12 gauge with 7X57 Charlin Cape gun be worth more than 1K? You bet. Again, I don't do hearsay. I want to know exactly what it is, before I suggest what it is worth. Best, Ted
