Hi Gents,

Could someone help me with deciphering a gallyon and son trade label the only image i have so far is as follows:

And the details of the label are not very clear. If someone with a label could help me decipher whats on the label that would be great, or take a high quality picture of a label that would be even better.

I want to create a label to go in a case fitted for a BLE by the maker.

I can decipher:

"Gallyon & Sons"
"Gun Makers"
"66 Bridge Street"
"Cambridge"
"Established (DATE?) "

I cant decipher whats in the two boxes either side.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Regards,

James.

Notes

William Gallyon was born in 1758 and apprenticed to John Henshaw of Cambridge in about 1772. He was recorded as a gunmaker from 1784, probably working from 14 Green Street, Cambridge which may have been his residence. William married in about 1793 and had two sons, William (b.1794) and William John (b.1829 when his father was 71 years of age!). In 1796 he, the father, bought William Henshaw's business from his widow, but it seems he continued trading at 14 Green Street. William died in 1838 and his elder son, William, ran the business until 1842 when he died. William John Gallyon (Snr) inherited the business and, in 1851 moved it to 17 Bridge Street.

The firm was not recorded between 1853 and 1856 but in 1857 it occupied 22 Park Street. Between 1858 and 1862 the firm was not recorded, but in 1863 it occupied 66 Bridge Street. Reportedly, the firm traded as William John Gallyon from about 1874, but in 1878 William John Gallyon (Snr) died and his wife, Mary Anne Gallyon, inherited the business. Reportedly, she traded as M A Gallyon & Son, the son also being named William John Gallyon (Jnr). Mary Ann died in 1909. Reportedly, the firm was re-named Gallyon & Son in about 1883, and Gallyon & Sons in about 1893. William John Gallyon Snr had another son named Theophilus P Gallyon, he joined the firm in 1893.

William John Gallyon Jnr died in 1919 and Thoephilus P Gallyon took over the firm. Theophilus P Gallyon died in 1930, and was succeeded by Frederick Theodore Nicholas Gallyon. In 1940 he bought the firm of Thomas Clough & Son at 52 High Street, King's Lynn. Between 1940 and 1952 the firm were appointed Gun and Cartridge Makers to His Majesty King George VI. In 1946 the firm took over the management of C S Rosson of Norwich, they ran the firm under the Rosson name from the Kings Lynn branch. In 1947 the Rosson family took back control.

In 1951 the company bought the business of Charles Francis & Son of 3 Cumbergate, Peterborough. It continued to trade under the Francis name until about 1960 when it became Gallyon & Sons (Peterborough) Ltd. In about 1953 the firm became a limited company, Gallyon & Sons Ltd. In 1960 F T N Gallyon's son, Richard Theodore Gallyon (b.1943) joined the business as an apprentice in the Cambridge workshop, but after three years moved to Birmingham where he worked for six months at Webley & Scott. Another six months were spent at various gunsmiths and firms supplying the gun trade in Birmingham before Richard returned to the family firm. On 1 May 1965 the company bought the business of C S Rosson & Co of 7 Bedford Street, Norwich, and this became the head office of the company until 1991. In 1978 Richard took control of the company. The shop at 3 Cumbergate, Peterborough moved in about 1973 to 5 Cowgate, it closed in 1991. The Cambridge and King's Lynn shops were closed in 1981 and 1982 respectively, the 5 Cowgate shop closed in 1991.

The company continues to trade at 4 Dereham Road, Hingham, Norwich, Norfolk, NR9 4HU. No records of Clough or Francis serial numbers exist. Internet Gun Club has details of Gallyon serial numbers and dates. The records of Gallyons are held in Hingham. In December 2002 at auction Gallyon and Sons bought the shotgun archives of Webley & Scott Ltd. See Gallyon & Sons under "Gun Suppliers" on this web site.

Other Info
The firm sold cartridges under the names "C A M Twenty" post 1910), "Club" (post 1900), "Lynton" (non-recoil!) (post 1927), "Granton", "Kilham", "Sandringham", "Granta", "Camroyd" and "Super-Vanguard".

I corresponded with Richard Gallyon a few years ago, and bought a trade label and other Gallyon accessories from him. Very friendly gentleman.

Above is an original and below is what i put together, corners are not quite tightly radius ed enough but the design is somewhere near. The original above has another line of text though other labels dont seem to have it.

The additional line of text reads: "Also at 52 High Street King's Lynn" and was used on labels from 1940 to 1951. I have attached a low res image for you.

In fact the firm used several labels during that period. If you know when the gun was built it might help to pin down the correct label for you.
