Shot a charity event yesterday. 50 bird course with my 1880's Army&Navy back action hammer gun. 2 bad mounts and a few missed targets but still ended strong with a good score. Cheddite primed paper hulls 2.75 inch. 76 grains of Old Eynsford 2 fg, .125 hard nitro card, two 1/4inch felt wads, one 1/8inch felt wad, topped with another .125 hard card. 1 oz. of 7.5 shot, overshot card and roll crimped. Following squad members asked "What the hell are you shooting?" (loud report and lot's of smoke). I did load the hard cards with the radius edge down and the sharp edge up. I think this had some scraping ability on the fouling and the felt gave a good gas seal. 20+ shots down each barrel and the tubes were very clean. Light fouling and still a bit bright! I fired two shots down each barrel with light smokeless RST loads at the last station just to burn out some fouling and make clean up easier when I got home. I could have easily completed the whole course with these loads. Old Eynsford burns very clean with light/soft fouling. This will be my standard go to load for 2.75 chambered guns. I also loaded some trimmed 2.5 inch Cheddite papers .125 hard nitro card, two 1/4 inch felt wads, one .070 hard card for use in my 2.5 inch chambered guns and will give them a run next time out. Very good outing with good friends and a nice gun!

Old Eynsford is a GOEX produced black powder. It would be available at any supplier. Also very good in muzzle loaders and cartridge rifles. I have been using it for about a year and really like it.

Typically, I have a choice between GOEX and GOEX when I need to buy black powder. There's seldom much of a choice in my area even though the black powder primitive weapons hunting season is fairly popular. Several years ago, I tried some Swiss FFg and liked it, but couldn't find it again after I ran out.

The best way to lay in a supply of powder is to order from a supplier. Some will ship in less than case lots (5 or10 ponds).

I have wondered about that, and always thought that the shipping and haz-mat fees might make it a lot more expensive than buying locally. Maybe it's time to actually check it out. Percussion caps have gotten hard to find and very expensive in my area too. Can you recommend a supplier?

Powder Inc. The Maine Powder House. Graf and Sons, Buffalo Arms Co. several others. Do a search for black powder suppliers and you may find one close to home.

Eric, thanks very much. I probably should lay in a good supply now since we are seeing Liberal Left Democrats once again calling for new gun laws and restrictions upon law abiding gun owners... none of which would have prevented the San Bernardino terrorist act.

The Democrats are once again lying and saying that the vast majority of us want these restrictions on our Constitutional Rights, so I have e-mailed my Senators and Congressman to let them know I am not interested in any new anti-gun measures. I hope everyone takes a couple minutes to do the same.
