A good friend recently gave me a 20 gauge N.I.D. It’s in pretty good overall condition but it has a problem with the top lever latch. If I push it over to the right it rarely stay there. Generally it snaps right back to the center as soon as I stop applying pressure. Was this a common problem with early N.I.D.s and is there a fix?
So far I’ve removed the trigger plate (with the spring), the sears and the stock. I have the receiver laying on my bench and I still can’t figure out what’s wrong.
I can push the top lever over to the right and use a punch to push the U shaped latch up to engage the rotary bolt but it seems as though the bolt only wants to cam the latch down instead of being engaged and stopped by it.
Any suggestions / help would be greatly appreciated.
Dan

Is the channel clean and free of any obstructions? If so, It sounds as though the J bar may be broken broken or damaged. This is not a problem I have seen. I once bought a gun whose top lever would not stay open BUT the problem was some one installed the spring on the wrong side of the J bar.

The J bar looks fine. I examined it with a magnifying glass under a strong light and I don't see any place where it may have been broken. It looks fine, with all surfaces well machined, not worn.
The channel is clean. If I had to hazard a guess I'd say the J bar is limiting on the pin that holds the hammers.
Is that normal? Dan

I suggest calling Gunter Pfrommer, 540 484-5555, He knows as much of the inner workings of NIDs as any one .

Walt, thanks for Gunter's phone number. I called him this afternoon and he gave me some ideas and a lot of additional information.
What a great thing it is to be able to call half way across the country and talk to someone you've never met who is willing to take some time out his own day to share his knowledge.
That kind of courtesy seems to be a common trait among the double gun crowd but its gratifying none the less.

Your are very welcome! Gunter does all my work. He is finishing redoing a 20 ga 7E NID with all the the options. I seldom have guns redone but this one presented no alternative. Good luck with your NID
