A friend has a Lewis model grade 1 12ga that has an interesting looking fore end. The serial is 94095. The fore end starts out like any splinter from the exposed part of the iron; on the wood about halfway up is what I call a "perch belly". It is where the fore end kind of rounds over and gets pretty thin for the rest of it's length. The checkering follows and looks original and there is a horn fore end tip. Is this original? Has this been seen before?
Thanks,

Jack K

Based upon the description I am picturing the forend on ithaca crass guns prior to serial 25,000 or so. I have two of them. If I need to dig them out and take photos I will, but they are not handy. I would bet the gun has a foremd from an earlier Crass gun (mismatched) or possibly it was requested or built at the time of order to match a previous order or gun that was sent back for repair and/ or comparison.
