Dan Kleber has moved to Montana to work in the shop with me and has asked me to help him sell a few vintage rifles. He will tell you about them and post more later but here are two:

John Hutton stocked this M-54 somewhere between 1936 - 1940. Hutton was a stockmaker for Griffin& Howe and then later worked for National Target owned by Townsend Whelen and was known to have built stocks for Whelen.

This rifle is a .257 Roberts as built by Winchester and later custom barreled. The rifle features a very desirable 4X Noske Scope and detachable Noske mount.

The stock is English walnut with lots of figure, color and finely checkered. The barrel is 26� and the rifle weighs 91/2 lbs.
All the metal is nicely rust blued with vintage style steel grip cap and checkered buttplate and the rifle is in overall excellent condition.

Buffalo Newton Model 1924 cal. 256N
This Newton is 100% factory original. The early rifles built lacked a cocking cam at the rear bridge that was added to later production rifles. This one is serial number 33 and lacks the cocking cam. The rifling is the parabolic type with strong lands but frosty from throat to muzzle. There are no extra sight or scope mounting holes.
There is no rust or pitting and the blueing is original but well worn. Stock finish is original. There is a small crack in the stock at the reinforcing bolt and numerous scatchs and dings and added sling swivels that are now missing ( they were not factory original)
The rifle feeds, chambers and functions properly, but I have never fired it.

The Hutton rifle is stamped with his name in the inletting using the same tool as shown in Petrov's, Custom Gunmakers, Volume Two. There is a very interesting chapter about John Hutton in the book.

Hutton's work really is exceptional, particularly his inletting. He is one of the more underrated stockmakers of his era in my opinion. Any collection of pre-war sporters needs an example of his work. This one is a bargain even with it's few small issues.

Some notes on the 1924 Newton. I have the serial numbers and features of very few 1924s, only 43. From this little amount of data, the percent of calibers produced were 42% in 30-06, 26% in 256, 21% in .30 Newton and 9% in .35 Newton. An educated estimate of the number of 1924s made is around 1000. There are serial numbers over 1000 although Meeker left with parts for 200-250 rifles in the 500-600 serial range. The small crack in the stock near the reinforcing bolt unfortunately is not uncommon. Newton experienced significant stock cracking in the Model 1916 First Model and tried to re-design the stock to withstand recoil. The change turned out to be not very successful. The 1924s have not been the most popular model to collect although are rare rifles and per caliber, more rare than the 1916. Most rifles in the Model 1924 that I have seen were in 30-06.

I have the Parker try gun that Colonel Whelen and Hutton shared for many years. Hutton took it with him when he moved "up on the mountain". Hutton apparently mentored Ben Toxvard toward a successful stockmaking career. I bought the try gun from Ben in the early seventies. I keep looking back at this thread to see whether the sale of the Hutton actually went through. Bill Murphy
