Packages get trashed in shipping all the time. The USPS tracking service is the worst of them all, even the Amish. Sad to hear of your loss and the only hope you have is to keep bugging them. The quiet compliant gets no action at all from them.
I have had claims with USPS, FedX, UPS and Airborn both for work and personal shipping. They all suck to some extent. UPS and FedX both claimed that the item was over insured and or improperly packaged. USPS claimed poor packing, refused to accept item valuation, refused to accept they damaged items in shipping. If I was due 20-30K insurance value over the years I would be lucky to have recovered 20%.
When the insurance company is the same as the shipper and they determine their own responsibility the claims are hard to collect on. It is like the defendant is the judge, jury and accused all at once. No conflict of interest there. Good luck with your claim or better yet your package arrives at last, intact and undamaged.

Thanks for commiserating with me on this issue. Misery loves company. I'm going back to the post office tomorrow and every single day until they find my property. I have the item insured and have called my insurance man, but I want the gun a lot more than any money. I don't think the barrels will be damaged because I packed them in pvc pipe. The gun is a beautiful little 28b WJ Jeffery with 28" fabulously hand -made barrels. It's really sad, sickening really.

I bought 3 shotguns at the Vegas Show. Two were shipped together via USPS. When they arrived the shipping box was damaged and the postman said he wanted to see me open it as it was damaged in shipping. The stock of the one gun was broken in shipping. A big chunk right off the wrist on the left of the top tang. Filed an appeal with pics, etc and it was denied. Filed a second one with more documentation and it was denied. Filed a third appeal. Spoke to our lawyer, he said they do this all the time, he'd send a letter and we'd get paid. He was correct!! 10 days after we spoke to him we had our insurance check. Just another bureaucracy that hates guns and is less than efficient.

The USPS can barely manage with letters, I would never give them a package. I have shipped hundreds of packages with Fedex over the years with excellent service. No complaints and I never throw money away on insurance. Saved $$thousands that way. Only thing you need to do is pack very, very well and skip the insurance profit for the carrier. Use heavy wall boxes and plenty of bubble wrap or peanuts.

I got great news, the Postmaster emailed me and the barrels have been recovered! YAY! I guess I was worried about nothing, but I think by my going to the PO every single day, it got the ball rolling. I have to tell you, sitting around thinking about the old, English gunmaker, who is long since dead, painstakingly and lovingly making those barrels, and that they were lost, or in a dumpster somewhere.......well, the thought of that almost made me throw up. Again, thanks to all of you for listening and for your advice to be the squeaky wheel who gets the grease. I'm VERY relieved!

Great news Buzz! Let us know when they are actually back in your hands or the destination....in the hands of someone who gives a shit.

I had once heard that USPS does not take a missing package seriously until it is missing for a month because is will usually show up. In the mean time polite lip service is the MO. This has been my experience as well.
Was the PVC pipe enclosed in a box or shipped round? If someone ships to me in a round tube I return it inside a box that won't roll off something and get lost.

Mark; I put the pvc pipe in a box. I was too dumb to write my name, address and tele# on the pvc pipe too. I had a nightmare the box fell apart........and being too dumb to put contact info on the pvc pipe, won't be a mistake I will ever make again either!
