A good friend sent me a black and white photocopy of the Amoskeag Auction Company's preview ad listing Col Towsend Whelen's Winchester Model 52 sporter serial number 26669. Would anyone here have more information about this rifle? I would love to be able to see some better pictures of it and to know what the rifle sold for at auction. An internet search has turned up nothing for me. Thanks, Bob

You'll find some information about it is Section 3 of "Mr Rifleman" by Whelen and Angier.

Whelen believed it to be the first 52 Sporter. It is part of Mark Benenson's Estate auction, to be held in a few weeks.

Thank you Mr Buffum. I have a four digit Winchester Model 52 that has a 24" barrel and very much resembles the Whelen 52. I just found a Fecker 4X Small Game Scope today to put on it. My Fecker is sn.4216 and the one on the Whelen 52 is sn.3022. I am hoping to find a more detailed picture of the Colonel's rifle just to use as a comparison. Bob

According to Houze; Whelens 52 was one of the prototypes made before actual production in 1934. Whelen wrote a review in 1933, according to the serial list on 52s 26669 was January 32. How accurate the serial list is is anyones guess and the receiver could have been in stock during that time as they probably made in batches.

I can't see the Whelen 52 in the auction catalog. What is the item number?
