I used to own a beautiful though time-worn english shotgun, a 12-gauge damascus double with side hammers, Greener lock. Birmingham Proofs. The only thing that might have been the maker's name was the inscription J.Stevens on the side. I haven't been able to find any information on J.Stevens but I figure this would be the place to ask.
I can't give a lot more detail because I was under the mistaken impression that the gun could not be fired because of the damascus barrels and eventually sold it. Now that I know better I am trying not to kick myself for parting with it...

J. Stevens huh, maybe it was an early British hardware store gun or they were trying to break into the colonial market by emulating the name of a well known American manufacturer . Sorry, I couldn't help myself.

IGC is the Internet Gun Club ( http://www.internetgunclub.com/Home.aspx) It is a magnificent resource of gunmakers names. It has been and continues to be a labour of love by one man, researching in depth any gunmaker or person in the gun trade. The biggest problem though is that the site runs on a bespoke platform that has always presented problems. Sometimes access is straightforward, sometimes it's frustratingly impossible! Tim
