My RBL had a loose fore end. I even sent it back. When it came home, the problem was solved for 200 rounds or so, then it got loose again. Costing me the freight.

Well, tonight I figured it out. The freaking screw on the fore end was somewhat LOOSE. What a dummy I am. Tightened it and now it's bank vault tight. I could have saved the shipping costs.

I hope none of you are as dumb as I am. The screw was loose and I should have figured it out immediately, but the screw looked tight.

I'm only posting this shameful post because I hope it will serve any others having this problem or those similar. There are a lot of screws on most shotguns and the first test is to see if they're tight. I assumed they were, but they're worked loose, and a drop of Lock Tite would have solved the problem forever on this good gun. Get a great gunsmith screwdriver set is my advice.

I am not a very good do-it-yourself guy.

That's how we often learn, through costly mistakes. Those lessons stay with us, if we are smart. We've all been there, in other ways. I did something similar, just weeks ago, with my grain combine. The automatic header height control would not work and I spent hours trying to find the problem, to no avail. Finally called the J. Deere dealer and had a service tech sent out. Prolly cost me $200 to learn that my hydraulic pump was getting a bit weak and all I had to do to get it to work was bring the engine up to operating speed. blush blush

Grandaddy's favorite saying was, "Fool me once, shame on you ........... fool me twice, shame on me." You won't ever overlook that again. Me either.

I have similar "loose forearm screw" problems with older SxS's.

One solution, if the wood is old and worn, is to inset 1/3 of a toothpick into the hole, before re-inserting the screw. In some cases, you may want to add a bit of wood glue to the toothpick, and then let that dry overnight, before re-inserting the metal screw.

Gene, can't remember the last time your name has appeared here. Welcome back. Life's best remembered lessons are often taught to us from the blind side. Gil

Great lesson, but the real question in my mind is, why didn't CSMC find the loose screw and tighten it themselves?

they probably did....that's why it was tight for 200 rounds....they just didn't want to tell you how easy it was to fix....have no idea why they wouldn't of put some loc-tite on it??....glad its fixed....those are the little things that can really work on you mind....

I frequently have a loose screw, the difference being that it is always in my head.

I once paid a Smith&Wesson armorer to fix my revolver. The strand of thread from a cleaning patch that was causing the extractor to sit high was plainly visible and removed - the gun fixed- in about 20 seconds.

Had issues with a cocking rod not properly cocking the hammers on a 1937'ish Mod 90 20ga. Asked around for replacement etc, or how best to weld it to make it longer.

Someone chimmed in and said 'just peen out the ends a bit'.

Worked like a charm, and saved me a load of time and money. Surprised I never thought of that myself!

Life is too short to have a 'hate on' for so many things or people. Isn't it?
