I am looking for load info. for 170g and 200g loads. I have had to repair stock after shooting S&B factory loads. My gunsmith advised to go easy on the repairs. My needs are for deer loads. I will only be shooting in the 0-150yds. range. Thank you for your interest. Best regards,Pilgrim

From Speer Reloading Manual:

170gr semi-spitzer powder 4350 55grains for 2632fps; 53grains for 2548fps, 51 grains for 2429fps.

170gr semi-spitzer powder 4064 49grains for 2723fps, 47 grains for 2631fps, 45 grains for 2509fps

200 grain spitzer powder 4350 53 grains for 2432fps, 51 grains for 2319fps, 49 grains for 2208fps

There are dozens of loads for 170 and 200 grain bullets for the 8 X 57 in the Winchester, Hodgdon, Hornady, old NRA hand loading manuals.

My choice for deer would be the milder 170gr loads of those above.

The Speer manual says these loads exceed the SAAMI maximum pressure which was set at 37,000 cup for the US industry because of the existence of so many of the older models. The above may go up to 50,000 cup.

"Use only in bolt action rifles in safe condition, chambered and barrelled for the 8 X 57mm JS cartridge, (.323" bullets)."

I have been loading:
47.5 grs of 4350 with Woodleigh .318" 200gr RN SN, in Norma brass.
I can't locate my chrono records right now but This load was lower velocity than the 8X57JRS, Norma Factory load.
I'm using this in a JP Sauer Drilling and a Kettner combination gun.
Accurate in these old guns and it anchors deer and hogs.
If you are loading for a bolt gun you can probably use a warmer load.
The previous post seems to be for the 8mm Mauser (.323") and warm at that.
Good luck.

[pilgrim,
I'm not going to advise you which load to use, since I know nothing about your rifle, but I use 46.5 gr H 4895(mil."pull down")behind a 196 gr bullet.I arrived at this load many years ago before I had a chronograph and when I got one the velocity was in the 8x60 area, so I suspect it would also work with 170 gr bullet. When I run out of these bullets(Norma), I will work up a milder load.

My Drilling is in my view sound. How ever in doing research on loading info. on this particular round I have Had little success. I guess I should ask what pressure range I should be looking at for a drilling made in 1937 and recipes designed to fall within those limits. Pilgrim

I have been playing around with cast .324" bullets in an '88 with the 'S' chamber. So far using modest charges of powders straight from the Lyman and RCBS manuals. Haven't done more than make it go bang yet but will continue to look for something to shoot to the sights.

I load for an older drilling but it is 8X57JRS (.323 bullet). I use a 125 grain Spitzer soft point pushed by 50 Grains of Winchester 748 and standard large rifle primers.

I know the bore is about 0.005" larger than yours but his load develops about 33,000CUP which is on the low end and makes a good White Tail round.

Enjoy the gun...

The DEVA (German firearms research and proof testing organization) reloading manual lists the 8X57IR as having a maximum gas pressure of 3200 bar, which translates into roughly 46,412 lb./sq.in.

The only load they list with American components is the 196 grain RWS bullet with 49 grains of 4064 in an RWS case with CCI 200 primer at maximum pressure. They also list 48 grains of Norma 202 or 50 grains of VitaVuori N 140 with the same weight Norma bullet, also at maximum pressure.
