I have done hot and slow rust for a well-known engraver in Charlottesville . The gold was not affected. I think his gold is 24K.

If the inlay is hammered into an undercut surface in the traditional manner hot caustic bluing can be used. If the engraver took a short cut & soft soldered the inlay in place it will likely fall out with a hot caustic bluing process.

A long gone gunsmith friend of mine ran into this problem when hot caustic bluing several Remington 1100 receivers that had large gold inlays.

Gold inlay will hold up to Case hardening. So hot bluing should not be an issue.

Some bluing solutions especially the express formulas have Mercury salts added and this can be disastrous as far as Gold inlay is concerned. Does the process contain any Mercury salts should be your first question?

The only lessons in my life I truly did learn from where the ones I paid for!
