I have a W21 with 2 original sets of barrels. The lesser used 26" set fits tight. The well used 30" set is loose. (off face?) A .006" feeler gauge will go between the barrel and receiver on either side when the gun is pushed in that direction. Any ideas? If it were the hinge pin needing replacement wouldn't the 26" set be loose also?
Thanks for your help.

Barrel lug radius needs to be built up to correct headspace. You are right that if hinge pin was worn the 26 inch barrels would have the same problem. Bobby

Send it to Lou Frutuoso at Galazan's.........talk to him on the phone and he can probably give you an estimate. Their work on 21's is very good or try Mitchell Schultz, Gunsmithing LTD.
Galazans: 860-335-6581

Gunsmithing LTD: 203-254-0436

Good afternoon,

I know you're looking for troubleshooting ideas, not necessarily a gun smith. But since you axed for "ideas", here's what I would do.

My suggestion, based on my own experience, is to send it to Galazan, too.

I've tried others and regretted my decision.

Worse, I learned that there is nothing as sour as paying for a do-over to on bad work from a dork who shouldn't have even attempted to undertake work they told you they could do--and then failed. You wonder if you're even going to get ol' Bessie back up and around.

Have no fear: Galazan stands behind their work. I found that others stand behind their locked door when you come back with a question--or worse yet, outright problems with their work.

What will this be worth to you?

Once, I didn't know any better--now I do. Therefore I wouldn't send it anywhere else if I were in your position.

Share an image of the gun, I'd love to see it, no matter what it's condition.

BB

I may try to make the Southern SxS as Tony's "wagon" is usually there. I don't have any pics but it's a 1940's Duck gun 30" F & IM with 3" chamber. It was returned to Win a year later for a 26" set with both bbls WS2. Skeet bbls are tight but 30" is loose.

Mitchell Schultz is a certified Winchester (discontinued models) gunsmith and is recommended by Pauline Muerrle, Winchester custom shop engraver (retired)...having said that, Lou at Galazan's did the same job for me as you evidently need. If you ask him to check the gun completely and fix what is needed, the gun will come back as tight as a brand new gun and be good for another 100,000 rounds or so. A repair letter will accompany the gun and Galazan's work does not affect the value or collector status of a 21. Good luck; you have an excellent shooter and the 21 Duck grade is considered one of the best American waterfowl guns.
