Yeah Dr. Wanker, maybe Obama will grant huge subsidies to get electric guns off the ground! Like, when hell freezes over.

Brown's design uses a coil not unlike an automobile. Open the circuit and the coil discharges. Brilliant!

Makes me wonder if his eureka! moment stemmed from getting a shock off an early internal combustion engine.

One of my homes had an auto garage designed to house early electric cars. It had a rotating turn table, and banks for battery storage and recharging. Just drive in, and spin around to leave.

They were popular and in competition with steam until a decent carburetor was invented.

Out there doing it best I can.

I have always wondered why a laser instant heat type of ignition hasnt been tried. it would use standard ammo with center fire primers put to ignition temperature instantly by a tiny laser beam. No springs firing pins or locks needed. No special ammo either.

I would think a laser powerful enough, with enough wattage to cause near instantanoeus ignition would be too large and require too much power to be practical. It would also add a large monetary cost. You can aim your laser pointer at a primer for a week and it won't get hot enough to detonate. Also, ignition with a small enough laser to incorporate into an action would still be much slower than the milliseconds speed of conventional spring actuated firing pins. Some things are very tough to improve upon in a practical and cost effective manner.

I presume that Brown had some means of making the circuit just prior to breaking it. If one started out on a day's hunt with a coil constantly engaged the battery would be dead for the hunt was well underway. Even a battery the size of an automobile battery didn't last long if the ignition was accidently left on & the points happened to be engaged. This does sound like a better system though than the vibrator coil Greener mentioned. If properly designed it should fire with a single "Spark", shouldn't take a chain of them.

I would have thought that just about everyone on the forum would be familiar with the electronically fired Vulcan which has been around since the late 50s but perhaps not.
It would be a bit much in a duck blind though! eek
