16 ga. Remington made VHE on a #1 frame. Pretty hight condition although the wear on the bottom of the barrels tells me the gun has spend a few days afield. Hard to say if the pad is original but I doubt it. It's maybe a $3k gun to the right buyer.

I agree with Jay. The gun, while very nice is not a virgin. Also has significant bluing loss on tang of trigger guard.

So what makes Ithaca16 think the barrels are cut? There is certainly nothing in the pictures that would suggest cut barrels. I think it is a high condition original gun that will end up in Jay S.'s inventory.

Completely original VHE with UNcut barrels. The pad is the only "questionable" in my opinion as far as originality.
And as far as a "$3,000" gun... the high bid dispels that notion pretty effectively.

Agreed - the keels are in place and the small smooth gap at the end of the rib matting looks correct.

the guys on the Winchester board have been discussing another "mint" gun, as the title there says - buyer beware

Why do you say that? There are always people, including some players, who will pay more than what a gun is actually worth. Interesting that there were six-bids, the last five of which were made by the same guy. Humm...

I do not smell a conspiracy here. If Jay was bidding he must have some prospects of reselling it for a higher amount. He know his market and may even have a potential future owner in mind. Heck who want to own a 16 ga. anyways? Everyone knows that they do not even make shells for them anymore. If you doubt it go look in Walmart.
