heat red and put in oil to cool rapidly.and draw temper i.e. heat to 700 if 1095.i have had trouble annealing the brownells spring steel after hardening.after temper try filing the spring you should be able to file it if the file skids across the spring its to hard and needs annealing.good luck mc

Are you sure the decimal is in the right place. A spring that is the thickness of a sheet of standard weight copy paper is that thick.

Go to a Car breakers yard and buy a leaf from a cart spring. You will have enough material for a lifetime of springs. Just cut and file. Time in the workshop keeps you out of household chores and off the internet.

new car springs are air hardened and wont anneal.older springs like model A will anneal good luck

Binko: What material is it made of? It must be able to be hardened first regardless of the material. Then it must be drawn back to a less hardend state. It involves molecular change of the steel and some voodoo science. It seems that every type of steel is different. I am not an expert but have had some luck with some types of steel.

Gil, I can't really tell you what material it is, only that it was a piece of spring steel that was a spring steel belt clip, that I had to heat to make the bend tighter than the 1/2" that it was down to 1/8" that I needed.

Heat to cherry red With a propane torch quench in clean soft water. then hang the spring on wire, put it in an electric oven set to 600 when the whole spring is an even blue color shut of the oven and let it cool for at least an hour do not open the door until then. Where did the steel come from?
