by the sight of would-be beautiful hammer guns but the hammers are BLUED!

To my eye they look cobbled together with spare parts and remind me of those awful S&W "Two-Tone" revolvers from the Seventies.

Just what is the deal with these? I believe I've only seen this done on high-end "name" guns, which makes it even worse. I think the real bottom was a Grant with hammers and side lever blued.

I suppose I'll be told that when the guns were new the actions wore vibrant case colors so everything went together nicer but I just don't know if that would do it for me either.

I don't know. The top lever on guns being blued doesn't detract from the overall beauty for me one bit, but I just can't abide blued hammers.

Anybody else feel this way or am I becoming too much of an aesthetic prig?

An interesting point:
My policy when restoring guns is to black items of furniture that were not case hardened and not to black those that are.
I also hate blacked hammers.
But I do black all levers other than RUL's, as these are always case hardened originally, but I never black hammers and always remove the blacking on those that have been done previously.
The tricky part to decide on is a forend iron that has been previously blacked. Personally, I would not blue this part (as it will have been colour hardened originally) but I have come across a lot that have been. To remove the blacking and have the metal match the action etc is very difficult, either by chemical or mechanical methods, so I usually decide to either leave as is or re-black.
On the subject of pins, I generally temper blue those that are located in un-blacked places and black the others.
I guess its all a matter of personal taste.

Toby, forgive my Americanism re: gun color. To me, dark is "blue(d)". Black or blackened is perhaps more proper and accurate. Regardless, you got the picture, and you seem to agree it is not a pretty one!
